The Grass Is Always Greener...with our best mowing tips!
Updated: Aug 7
In our last blog post, we covered some of the treatments and services that can help your lawn look its best. But since mowing is something you are likely to do yourself, we wanted to share our answers to the top questions we get about mowing.
Sharpen the Saw
Q: What can I do to keep my mower in tip-top shape?
A: Keep your blade sharp! A sharp mower blade not only provides a cleaner cut to your grass, but also reduces your mowing time AND helps the grass recover more quickly. We suggest you sharpen your blade TWO times per season to around the sharpness of a butter knife. Too sharp, and your blade will dull very quickly.
Cutting The Grass
Q: If you cut your lawn short, you don't have to mow it as often. Am I right? 🤦🏼♀️
A: It's time to get out your rulers! The best height for your summer lawn is 2.5 inches and you should only cut 1/3 of the blade at one time. This ensures your grass can recover quickly and also minimizes its stress. You should mow only when your grass needs it, and a good rule of thumb is to mow when grass is 3 2/3 inches long.
Q: Can I mow after a week of rain?
A: Sure but never mow wet grass! Not only is your lawn more difficult to cut, wet grass is harder to clean up and the grass clippings can choke your lawn. Cutting wet grass also makes your grass more susceptible to mold and fungus like ascochyta leaf blight. If that didn't convince you, depending on your mower, you may also run the risk of electrocuting yourself.
